Sweetwater Police Department officer dies after battle with cancer

SWEETWATER, Tenn. (WVLT) – The Sweetwater Police Department is mourning the loss of one of its officers.

SPD announced Friday that Officer Tyler Blankenship died after a tough battle with cancer.

Officer Blankenship began his career with SPD in November 2019 and graduated from the Tennessee Law Enforcement Training Academy in March 2021.

“Throughout his career, Officer Blankenship demonstrated the true meaning of not only a good officer, but also a good man, which is why he was such a respected officer by the public and colleagues,” said the SPD. said in a Facebook post.

“We are heartbroken and devastated by the loss of our family member,” Chief Eddie Byrum and Deputy Chief Kevin Watson said in a statement. “We want to thank everyone for their support and prayers as we navigate this difficult time and we will continue to serve our community in the same way that Officer Blankenship did during his service in the City of Sweetwater. “

A memorial was erected at the Gazebo in downtown Sweetwater to honor Blankenship.

Among those who offered condolences to Blankenship and his family was Monroe County Sheriff Tommy Jones, who said Blankenship “served his community honorably and will be greatly missed.”
