Giants among potential suitors for Braves ace after strong 2024

The San Francisco Giants have an opportunity to succeed in an area in which they have failed over the past two offseasons.

They failed to sign star players to long-term deals, with notable misses including Aaron Judge, Carlos Correa and Shohei Ohtani. But they could finally land someone this winter.

Left-hander Max Fried is one of the top starters on the free agent market. MLB Trade Rumors predicted San Francisco would be all over him.

“Atlanta will likely be involved to some extent, but the years and dollars discussed will likely quickly exceed their comfort zone, given these factors. Other teams that could play for Fried include the Mets, Giants, Red Sox, Padres, Cubs, Orioles, Tigers, Angels and Dodgers.”

The Giants will need a starting pitcher this offseason. Although they have Logan Webb, Blake Snell opted out of his two-year, $62 million contract with the team.

San Francisco is unlikely to retain Snell, so Fried might be the best thing for them. He made 29 starts for the Atlanta Braves this season, going 11-10 with a 3.25 ERA in 174 1/3 innings while posting 3.5 wins above replacement.

Fried will be expensive, but new president of baseball operations Buster Posey has indicated he will spend money next offseason.

If the Giants want to win, they should definitely try to land the southpaw. They need an ace-level pitcher in their rotation, and it would be wise for them to jump into the fray.
