Trump’s victory raises concerns among some members of Los Angeles’ LGBTQ community

Following the outcome of the US presidential election, some members of the LGBTQ community have expressed concerns about the impact of Donald Trump’s second term on their rights.

Some consider it a crisis, while others believe it is just a bump in the road. FOX 11 spoke with a mental health expert who is very concerned about Tuesday’s results.

“I’m really expecting one of the biggest mental health crises our population has seen in decades,” said trauma counselor Mell McCracken.

McCracken, who uses they/them pronouns, has a decade of experience treating mental health and substance abuse issues. They said many in the gay community fear their rights will be taken away under a second Trump administration.

“I’ve seen people have a panic attack almost daily,” they explained.

Thursday night at the Silver Fox in Long Beach, patrons said they had felt a range of emotions since election night. Many of these emotions have been negative.

“While there are a lot of dark feelings within our community, we are pretty willing to fight for our rights for the things we have already established,” one customer explained.

“It’s going to be difficult overall for the LGBTQ community to move forward and not have their rights taken away,” added another Silver Fox patrol.

A third advocate fears that reproductive rights are also under threat. “It’s very concerning for us,” he said.

For those who are struggling, McCracken recommends entering community spaces, sharing their struggles with others, and finding clinical support.

Many said they took comfort in living in California and, if they did, they believed Gov. Gavin Newsom would protect their rights.
