Dow Wavers, but the S&P 500 and Nasdaq keep the party going

The stock market’s post-election rally continued Thursday, but the Dow Jones lagged as some aspects of trade with Trump declined.

The S&P 500 rose 0.6% to 5961, coming within striking distance of 6000. The Nasdaq Composite rose 1.2%. The Dow Jones was down 25 points, or 0.1%. All three hit record closing highs on Wednesday, so any upside today would be another milestone.

At the sector level, yesterday’s big winners fell: the S&P 500 financial sector fell 1.1%, while energy fell 0.8% and the industrial sector fell 0.2%. This could reflect some profit taking after the sharp rise in all three sectors following Donald Trump’s victory over Kamala Harris. Trump’s positions on drilling and rolling back regulations have benefited these sectors more than the rest of the market.
