After the search engine, OpenAI plans to introduce an internal browser

After launching its search engine Earlier this month, OpenAI plans to launch its internal browser, the Information reported. If this happens, OpenAI will be put into direct competition with Google Chrome. The report also states that the OpenAI browser would combine with its chatbot and provide much more accurate responses and results. The company has discussed its next product with app developers and websites like Conde Nast, Redfin, Eventbrite and Priceline, who may have seen its prototype or design, according to the report.

Launching a browser would strengthen the company’s reputation, especially since it is already a leader in artificial intelligence since the release of ChatGPT. Notably, the company has also ventured into the search market with SearchGPT, a feature available to premium users.

An ideal place

Although OpenAI’s bowser is only in the planning stages, it’s currently an ideal location. As the next browser will be in the race with Google Chrome, the ongoing trial is a cherry on the cake. The U.S. Justice Department has recommended significant changes to Google’s structure and operations, including the potential sale of its Chrome browser, as part of efforts to dismantle its dominance in Internet search. The proposals follow an unprecedented court ruling in August, in which a federal judge determined that Google had illegally maintained a monopoly on search services.

Google controls about 90 percent of the online search market, and Chrome, a key way to present Google search to Internet users, controls more than 50 percent of the U.S. browser market.

“Google’s illegal conduct deprived its competitors not only of essential distribution channels, but also of distribution partners that could otherwise allow competitors to access these markets in new and innovative ways,” the DoJ said.

The ongoing lawsuit against Google, forcing it to sell Google Chrome, makes this an ultimate opportunity for OpenAI to make its mark.

SearchGPT

According to OpenAI, users can get quick and timely answers with links to relevant web sources, for which you would previously have had to go to a search engine. “This combines the benefits of a natural language interface with the value of up-to-date sports scores, news, stock quotes and much more,” OpenAI added. ChatGPT will choose to search the web based on what you ask, or you can manually choose to search by clicking the web search icon.

It is currently available to all ChatGPT Plus and Team users. OpenAI will also roll out the feature to all of its free users over the coming months.
