Flash flood warning in effect for parts of Oahu and Maui

HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) – The National Weather Service in Honolulu has issued a flash flood warning for Oahu until 9:30 a.m.

At 6:40 a.m., radar indicated heavy rain upwind of Oahu. Rain rates ranging from 1.5 to 2.5 inches per hour were observed.

Periods of heavy downpours on already saturated soils can quickly lead to runoff and flash flooding. River water levels are expected to continue to rise. Flash flooding is occurring or expected to begin shortly.

A flash flood warning is also in effect for the island of Maui until 9:45 a.m.

At 6:38 a.m., radar indicated heavy rain upwind east of Maui. The rain was falling at a rate of 2 to 3 inches per hour.

Flash flooding is occurring or expected to begin shortly.

Some locations that will experience flash flooding include Nahiku, Keanae, Kipahulu, Hana, Kaupo, Huelo, Makawao, Haiku-Pauwela, Pauwela, Paia, Wailua, Haleakala State Park, Kailua and Hamoa.

The Hawaii News Now Weather Team marked Saturday and Sunday as early weather alert days on Hawaii Island.

An upper-level disturbance and deep pocket of moisture could bring heavy rain and isolated thunderstorms to windward portions of Hawaii Island.

There is a risk of thunderstorms on the windward sides of all islands this morning.
