Akbar Ali suspended for two NCL matches after broken chair incident

Under-19 World Cup winning captain Akbar Ali has been suspended for two matches for violating the National Cricket League (NCL) code of conduct.

The ban follows a recent incident in which Rangpur Division captain broke a chair in anger during a match against Barishal, leading to disciplinary action from the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB).

The incident took place on November 19 at the Shaheed Kamruzzaman Stadium in Rajshahi, during a National Cricket League match.

While on the field, Akbar was involved in a heated exchange with the umpire, and his frustration increased when he was dismissed while batting.

In a fit of anger, he threw his bat and then broke a chair, which is a blatant violation of the BCB Code of Conduct, specifically a Level 2 offense. This led to Akbar’s suspension for the next two rounds of the competition.

On-field umpires Mahfuzur Rahman and Sohorab Hossain, along with experienced match referee Akhtar Ahmed, submitted their report on the incident. As a result, Akbar Ali will miss the upcoming sixth round match against Dhaka Metro, starting November 22, as well as the following match against Khulna.

Despite his strong performance as captain of the Bangladesh Under-19 team, which he led to victory in the 2020 ICC Under-19 Cricket World Cup, Akbar’s career has been marred by off-the-field controversies. This latest incident is a major blow to his reputation, especially given his struggles to establish himself in international cricket.
