NFL News, Injury Updates: QBs Jordan Love, Drake Maye out early with injuries, Stefon Diggs injured knee

Week 8 of the regular season was busy, but Jayden Daniels stole the show with what should undoubtedly be considered the play of the year while leading the Washington Commanders to a miraculous victory against the Chicago Bears.

Aside from this Hail Mary, however, several starting quarterbacks were injured around the league on Sunday. Here’s a look at the latest news, injury updates and more in the NFL as Week 8 ends.

The Green Bay Packers were victorious on Sunday afternoon, but they lost quarterback Jordan Love in the process.

Love left their 30-27 victory over the Jacksonville Jaguars in the third quarter on Sunday after taking an awkward blow to the back after the whistle. He was slow to get back up after the play and was later replaced by Malik Willis with what the Packers called a groin injury.

Love’s status is unknown, but coach Matt LaFleur said after the game that there was “obviously a high level of concern.” The Packers will host the Detroit Lions on Sunday afternoon. If Love isn’t ready to go in this critical NFC North game, Willis will get the start.

Patriots quarterback Drake Maye left his win over the New York Jets early after taking a shot in the head Sunday afternoon.

Jets linebacker Jamien Sherwood made helmet-to-helmet contact with Maye from behind as Maye slid into a scrum. Sherwood was not called for a penalty, but Maye went to the medical tent and was ruled out for the rest of the game with a head injury. Jacoby Brissett took over and led the Patriots to a 25-22 victory.

Maye is now in concussion protocol, and it is unclear when he will be able to return for the Patriots. They will face the Tennessee Titans next week. If Maye doesn’t sign off on the protocol in time, Brissett will likely start. Brissett was the Patriots’ starting quarterback at the start of the season, but Maye took over earlier this month.

Houston Texans wide receiver Stefon Diggs suffered a non-contact knee injury during their close win over the Colts on Sunday afternoon.

Diggs’ right knee is awkwardly bent as he crashed while running a route in the second half that sent him to the turf in pain before eventually heading to the locker room. He has not returned and is currently being evaluated. The details of his knee injury are not yet known, but it doesn’t look good.

Diggs had a team-high five catches for 81 yards when he fell. The Texans also have a short week as they face the New York Jets on Thursday night.

  • Not a great look for the Patriots…

  • Chiefs acquire LB Josh Uche from Patriots for 2026 6th round pick

  • Packers CB Jaire Alexander reportedly underwent knee MRI

  • National Tight Ends Day became a real holiday in Week 8

Every year we hear about National Tight Ends Day, a “holiday” invented by 49ers TE George Kittle to honor an underappreciated position. Like all the holidays you hear about in emails from your elderly loved ones, it’s not a real thing.

But on Sunday of week 8 of the 2024 season, National Tight Ends Day has become a real holiday. The tight ends combined for 177 total receptions, the most by any tight end in a single day in NFL history. Those receptions amounted to 1,965 receiving yards and included 16 touchdowns.

Was the increase in TE action just a happy accident? Or did each team get a memo from the commissioner’s office reminding them of National Tight Ends Day, so that there would be a burst of big TE play on a chosen day?

We don’t know. We may never know. Maybe National Tight Ends Day will just be a regular Sunday next year. Perhaps last Sunday saw a unique alignment of stars and planets that brought tight ends to the forefront and highlighted their usefulness in various football situations.

No matter what, we will always keep the memories.

  • Sunday was a tough day for injuries

Sunday was filled with exciting matches, incredible plays and crazy finishes, but Week 8 was tough on injuries. Here are some players who left yesterday’s games with an injury.

Packers quarterback Jordan likes: Left winger won against the Jaguars due to a groin injury.

Patriots quarterback Drake Maye: Victory for the left against the Jets with concussion following a helmet-to-helmet impact.

Texans WR Stefon Diggs: Left wing victory against the Colts with non-contact knee injury.

Jaguars WR Christian Kirk: Broke his collarbone in a loss to the Packers, outside for the season.

There could be injury news for Love, Maye and Diggs on Monday.
