Calgary Weather: Snowfall Warning issued on November 22, 2024

Calgary is under a snowfall warning with total amounts expected to be 15 to 25 centimetres.

Environment and Climate Change Canada issued a warning Friday, saying snow will begin to fall throughout the day, intensify Saturday morning and continue into Sunday morning.

On his websiteThe City of Calgary warns that residents should prepare for winter conditions when traveling this weekend.

“Bundle up and allow plenty of time to get to your destination. »

Calgary’s Priority Snow Plan

Calgary clears snow-covered roads using a Priority Snow Plan.

Crews spend the first 18 hours after the snow ends tackling Priority 1 routes, including roads with more than 20,000 vehicles per day, like Crowchild Trail, as well as downtown bike paths.

Deerfoot Trail and Stoney Trail are maintained by the provincial government.

Crews then focus on Priority 2 routes – roads that carry more than 5,000 vehicles per day – like Kensington Road and Acadia Drive, as well as designated emergency routes around hospitals and fire stations, bus routes and roads with on-street bike lanes. This is done from 18 hours after the end of snowfall until 36 hours.

After that, crews turn to clearing Priority 3 routes, which include school zones and playgrounds.

Although the city generally does not plow residential streets, crews will level ruts if necessary.

Parking bans on snowy roads

As of Friday morning, no parking bans on snow-covered roads were in effect.

A parking ban on snow-covered roads may be put in place to help crews clear snow from the streets.

Parking bans are put in place when Calgary has experienced significant snow accumulation.

Once called, parking bans on snow-covered roads can be in effect for up to 72 hours.

Snowy routes are marked with blue signs with a white snowflake symbol.

Any vehicle left on snow-covered roads during the ban may be ticketed or towed, but accessible street parking is exempt.
