Meet the Candidate: Jana Horsnall – DiscoverMooseJaw.com

Here is Jana Horsnall’s response to questions posed by Discover Moose Jaw to all city council candidates:

Q: Why are you running for mayor/council?

A: I’m running for city council because I’m deeply committed to revitalizing Moose Jaw, creating real opportunities for businesses, and solving pressing social issues like homelessness, addiction, and mental health. I believe that with focused and actionable plans, we can make Moose Jaw a safer, more prosperous and more welcoming place for all.

Who am I?

I am a proud lifelong Moose Javian, grew up on a farm and am grateful to have raised my family in Moose Jaw. My qualifications include psychiatric nursing, wellbeing coaching, mediation and conflict resolution and palliative care. With over 35 years of experience in personal development and mental health, I have dedicated my career to empowering people to succeed. I have served on community boards, am CEO of Lakeview Regional Wellness Center, and co-founder of Dr. Goodenowes Restorative Health. I bring a strong sense of civic duty. As I approach retirement, I am running for city council to make Moose Jaw safer, more prosperous and more welcoming for all.

What is my campaign message?

I am committed to revitalizing downtown, implementing fair taxation, streamlining regulations, and ensuring the safety of all families and communities. By empowering local organizations, we can combat homelessness, addiction and mental health, providing safe and affordable housing, education and jobs. It’s time for action, not more coming together, to ensure a future that all residents and businesses deserve. I will work tirelessly to ensure Moose Jaw acts where it has failed, providing every citizen with the resources and support they deserve.

Why should people vote for me?
People should vote for me because I offer a clear and concrete vision for the future of Moose Jaw. I am committed to making Moose Jaw a business-friendly city that supports its local entrepreneurs and provides a safe and welcoming environment for all to enjoy. I am ready to work with the community to bring new ideas and address challenges head on. I will work hard to ensure the city steps up where it has failed and that our citizens have the resources and support they deserve.

Q: Do you have experience in public service, community boards, or politics?

A: Yes, I have extensive experience in public service, having served on numerous community boards dedicated to improving services to residents of Moose Jaw. I am also CEO of Lakeview Regional Wellness Center and co-founder of Dr. Goodenowes Restorative Health Center, where I have worked to empower people and create support programs for over 35 years.

Q: Do you think experience matters in any way?

A: Yes, experience matters, especially when it comes to understanding community needs and knowing how to collaborate effectively with others. My years in personal development, mental health and community leadership have taught me to listen, adapt and act, which I believe will serve Moose Jaw well on city council.

Q: What topic/political issue/incident was a tipping point for you?

A: Seeing the need for stronger support for local businesses, combined with issues of homelessness, substance abuse and safety, led me to run for city council. I realized that Moose Jaw needed action, not just talk, to empower local organizations, address social issues, and create a city where everyone has the resources they need to thrive.

Q: What criticisms do you have, if any, of the policies you’ve seen over the last two or three years?

A: I think we’ve seen delays in addressing key community issues, with discussion often taking the place of real action. Residents and businesses deserve plans and real solutions, and I am committed to going beyond words to create a safer, more vibrant Moose Jaw for everyone.

Q: What is your proposed compromise/cooperation with other council members to achieve political goals?

A: I strongly believe in collaboration and respect different perspectives. My experience in mediation and conflict resolution has prepared me to work constructively with others, find common ground, and work toward common goals. I will prioritize open communication, transparency, and a solutions-focused approach with other board members.

Q: What else do you want voters to know about you?

A: I am a proud, lifelong Moose Javian, with deep roots and a strong commitment to this community. I am passionate about helping others and as I approach retirement, I want to give back by serving Moose Jaw. My career has been about empowering people to succeed, and I am committed to bringing that same drive to City Council.

Q: In the interest of transparency, do you coordinate or share association with other candidates in any way?

A: Yes, I present myself independently and as a member of a team. I am solely focused on the well-being of Moose Jaw and our community. I believe in collaborative teamwork within city council to achieve the best results for everyone. My career has given me the experience and independence to propose new and unbiased ideas, and my financial independence ensures that my commitment to Moose Jaw is driven solely by the interests of the community, and not by personal gain or commercial.
