76ers rookie shows first signs of stardom

Production, especially positive impact, is not typical of NBA rookies.

It’s not that they aren’t talented or capable, just that the skill jump is difficult for most players. And the inefficiency and turnovers that come with newness β€” along with reduced playing time β€” can be a difficult step forward for first-year players.

Those who manage to break through with decent production or, almost miraculously, with a positive impact, usually end up as stars down the line.

After just 11 games, Philadelphia 76ers rookie Jared McCain looks set to add himself to the latter list.

In his last four games, McCain has averaged 25.5 points on a decent 46% shooting rate. Needless to say, that would rank him among the league’s top scorers during that stretch, and 17 triples during that same span speaks volumes about the confidence he’s playing with.

More simply put, NBA freshmen simply don’t see this type of production for an extended period of time. Many would be lucky to see a solid 20-point team in their first year, let alone three times in four games, with high points at 34 points.

To most evaluators, it seems that McCain could really become a celebrity if given the right development path and opportunities. And the confidence with which he played at every level lends itself well to this conversation.

On the season, McCain is now averaging a rookie-high 13.5 points per game on 46% shooting – well above most of his surrounding talents on the stat board. He’s shooting a blistering 39 percent on nearly five attempts per game from three, a good number even for the league’s most seasoned veterans. And to top it all off, he adds 2.3 assists and 2.1 rebounds per game.

At the collegiate level, the former five-star got off to a slow start at Duke before finally finding his groove. Now, in the NBA, he only needed a few games before he had the best stretch of basketball of his career.

McCain’s ascension to the NBA’s elite would be welcome for Philadelphia. Although the franchise already has a trio of stars, the former Duke Blue Devil fits in perfectly alongside its franchise player in Embiid. And he’d have no problem fitting in next to Tyrese Maxey in the backcourt, either, as a scrappy defender for his size.

Of course, it’s time for McCain to calm down. And Philly’s trio of Maxey, Joel Embiid and Paul George has yet to play a single game together, meaning McCain’s opportunity as a primary or secondary scorer could be short-lived. And his high play hasn’t necessarily led to a higher winning percentage for the team: just 1-3 over that span, with losses to the Cavaliers, Knicks and Lakers.

But for now, we’ll continue to watch McCain put together one of the best rookie streaks we’ve seen in some time.
