Illegal nightclub Jamaica Plain: what you need to know

Here’s what we know and what we don’t know about this unusual case.

McDermott and D’Addieco had initially leased the space to run a heating, ventilation and air conditioning business, according to court records. During the pandemic, they remodeled the space, allegedly to accommodate an illegal nightclub with hookahs, a DJ and bottle service, officials said. Customers paid more than $100 for full bottles of alcohol.

The two officers operated the nightclub for “several months” and served alcohol without a license, officials said. They hired bouncers equipped with magnetometers to check the weapons of attendees and promoters who advertised the club on social media.

The shooting that broke him

On July 10, 2021, an altercation outside the club resulted in a person leaving and returning to the scene with a gun, according to court records. The man then fired several rounds at the front door. One of the bouncers inside was shot multiple times and treated at Boston Medical Center, officials said.

When police arrived, they found shell casings on the ground, bullet holes in the glass door and blood, officials said. A tactical unit forced entry into the club. McDermott was one of the last people to leave, according to court records, and responding officers recognized him. McDermott, while armed with a gun, told officers he was going to his brother-in-law’s party and had no idea what was going on, officials say .

Again Surveillance footage showed McDermott looking through the club’s front door and stepping over blood and broken glass before police arrived, officials said. He also made other false statements in a subsequent interview with the station, they said.

The video shows D’Addieco’s car driving down Center Street after the shooting and parking in front of the nightclub, » officials said. Police traced several calls between the two men after the shooting.

A review of McDermott’s financial statements showed that he had made a a large number of purchases at package stores near the nightclub, officials said.

What charges do they face?

McDermott was charged with witness intimidation, maintaining a gaming nuisance and using criminal record information under false pretenses. D’Addieco was charged with concealing evidence in a criminal proceeding and maintaining a gambling nuisance, according to the Suffolk County District Attorney’s Office.

Both men pleaded not guilty to the charges against them and were released on personal recognizance. They are due back in court on January 7.

Detective Sergeant John Boyle, a spokesman for the Boston Police Department, told the Globe during the weekend McDermott was suspended without pay after being charged.

A BPHC spokesperson said D’Addieco was placed on paid administrative leave pending an internal review.

What happened in the last 3 years?

There is little documentation of what happened in the three years after the shooting. On July 10, 2021, the Globe reported that a man was shot shortly after 4:30 a.m. near the alleged nightclub.

“He was found suffering from non-life-threatening injuries and was taken to hospital, police said.” said the Globe.

It’s unclear what actions police and the Boston Public Health Commission took after authorities became aware of the nightclub.

Court records don’t provide many details about the relationship between McDermott and D’Addieco, including how they met and why they allegedly decided to start the nightclub. McDermott’s attorney, John Seed, declined to comment.

D’Addieco’s attorney, Francis Sacco, said his client is “looking forward to his day in court.”

Neither attorney immediately responded to requests for comment Monday morning.
