BMC reveals major property tax defaulters totaling Rs 222 Crore | Bombay News

Mumbai: The BMC has released another list of major defaulters who collectively owe the civic body Rs 222 crore in property tax arrears. According to a civic statement, attachment notices have been issued under Section 203 of the MMC Act to defaulters who have delayed payment of property tax within the prescribed period, despite having the financial capacity to pay .
The civic body has warned that if the tax is not paid within the prescribed period, as per the provisions of the Mumbai Municipal Corporation Act, the said property will be attached and auctioned under sections 204, 205 and 206 of the MMC Act. Property tax and tax payment must be made within 90 days of receipt of invoice.
Agents of the Tax Assessment and Collection Department of the Municipal Corporation monitor the payment of property tax by contacting and communicating with the landowner. If the property tax is still not paid, a “formal notice” is sent and, in the next step, a final notice of 21 days is given to the owner. Subsequently, attachment of the property of the defaulters and auction of the property is carried out.
The top 10 property tax defaulters as of November 21 include HDIL Ltd — Rs 32 crore, Kamala Mills Ltd — Rs 31 crore, Wadhwa Deserve — Rs 26 crore, Kamala Mills Ltd — Rs 24 crore, Govindram Brothers Ltd — Rs 22 crore , His Holiness Sardar Tahir Saifuddin Sahib – Rs 20 crore, Galaxy Corporation – Rs 19 crore, Suraj Handa, Vishnu Prasad – Rs 18 crore, Ariston Developers Private Limited – Rs 16 crore and Omkar Developers Pvt Ltd – Rs 15 crore.
