Rebecca Hall regrets apologizing for working with Woody Allen.

The 42-year-old actress starred in controversial filmmaker’s 2008 film ‘Vicky Cristina Barcelona’ before appearing in 2019’s ‘A Rainy Day In New York’, but after feeling compelled to speak out against the director – whose daughter Dylan Farrow has accused him of sexually assaulting her as a child – and of donating his fee for the latter film to the Time’s Up Legal Defense Fund, she now admitted that she wished she hadn’t done it.

Rebecca felt her remarks were misinterpreted and she doesn’t think it’s an actor’s “responsibility” to get involved in such situations.

She told the Observer magazine: “It’s completely unlike me to make a public statement about anything. I do things, that’s how I’m political. I don’t consider myself a “visitor-actor”, I’m not that person.

“And I kind of regret making that statement, because I don’t think it’s the actors’ responsibility to talk about this situation.”

While working on the film, allegations of sexual misconduct against its producer Harvey Weinstein first broke, and Rebecca found herself constantly questioned about the two men, leaving her in a “tangle” and feeling that She had no choice but to make her statement.

She remembers: Right now, it’s the most important thing to believe women. Yes, of course there will be complications and nuances to these stories, but we are restoring a balance here. So I wanted to do something definitive.

Explaining that she wanted to keep a balance while admitting her discomfort with the allegations, she added: “But it just became ‘another person denounces Woody Allen and regrets working with him,’ which is not not what I actually said. I don’t regret working with him. He gave me a great job opportunity and he was nice to me…

“I don’t talk to him anymore, but I don’t think we should be the judges and parties in this matter.”

And if she found herself in a similar situation again, the “Listeners” star would stay silent.

Asked how she would do it now, she replied: “I wouldn’t say anything – my policy is actually to be an artist. Don’t go out and say too much. I don’t think this makes me apathetic or unengaged. I just think it’s my job.

In her original statement, Rebecca said she was “deeply sorry” for accepting her role in “A Rainy Day In New York.”

Posting on Instagram in January 2018, she wrote in part: “When I was asked to do this about seven months ago, I quickly said yes. (Woody) gave me one of my first important film roles for which I have always been grateful, it was one day in my hometown – it’s easy, but I later realized that there was nothing easy about it .

“In the weeks since, I have thought very deeply about this decision and remain conflicted and saddened. After reading and re-reading Dylan Farrow’s statements a few days ago and re-reading the older ones, I see, not only how complicated it is, but my actions made another woman feel silenced and rejected.

“This is not something that suits me at this time or indeed at any time, and I am deeply sorry for that.

“I regret this decision and I would not make the same decision today. It’s a small gesture and not compensation, but I donated my salary to @timesup. I have also signed up, will continue to donate and look forward to working and being a part of this positive movement towards change, not only in Hollywood but hopefully everywhere. #timeup (sic)
