Georgian opposition files legal action to recognize elections as unconstitutional – World

TBILISI, November 19. /TASS/. Around 30 opposition delegates to the Georgian Parliament have filed a complaint with the Constitutional Court demanding that the October 26 parliamentary elections be declared unconstitutional, MP Tamar Kordzaia said at a press briefing.

“Today, 30 members of the Georgian Parliament filed a complaint with the Constitutional Court demanding that the elections be recognized as unconstitutional,” she said.

According to Kordzaia, the newly elected Georgian Parliament should not meet because the election results are being challenged in court.

On Tuesday, Georgian President Salome Zourabichvili filed a similar complaint with the Constitutional Court.

Election results

Parliamentary elections were held in Georgia on October 26, using widespread use of electronic ballot boxes for the first time. According to the Central Election Commission, the ruling Georgian Dream-Democratic Georgia party received 53.93% of the vote and obtained 89 seats in Parliament out of 150. Four opposition parties exceeded the 5% threshold: the Coalition for change obtained 11.03% and 19%. seats, National Unity Movement — 10.17% and 16 seats, Strong Georgia — 8.81% and 14 seats, and Gakharia for Georgia — 7.78% and 12 seats.

All opposition parties that entered Parliament refuse to recognize the election results because they believe that the data from the Central Election Commission was falsified. Opposition leaders have been holding protest rallies since November 4.
