In this sense, we have come full circle. Trump’s 2016 campaign was full of humor, even after he won the Republican nomination (because, of course, he couldn’t defeat Hillary Clinton!). It was only after his shocking victory, and especially after he took office and started trying to implement all the horrible ideas he put forward during the election campaign, that the #Resistance took had the upper hand and the prankster politician was no longer so funny. But today, it has once again become socially acceptable to find humor in Trump.

There is a risk of overinterpretation of the rapid spread of this bizarre dance, which is, like so many things Trump says or does, stupid and devoid of substance. I suppose one could write at length about what Trump’s jerky movements, performed during a famous gay anthem, say about right-wing masculinity. But he really is squirming like an idiot.

But does it mean anything when Christian Pulisic does it? Perhaps it was an act of profound catharsis for an athlete who spent nearly a decade hiding his deep and abiding love for Trump. But I especially believe Pulisic when he insists that he didn’t really mean anything by it and just thinks it’s “funny.” On the one hand, it is East quite funny. On the other hand, dancing is truly a viral trend. Over the weekend, Pulisic saw a number of his fellow athletes break into the dance, so he did too.
