Joe Biden thanks Nigerian president for freeing Binance executive Tigran Gambaryan from prison

US President Joe Biden has expressed his gratitude to Nigerian President Bola Tinubu for securing the release of Binance Compliance Officer Tigran Gambaryan from prison.

Gambaryan, a former agent of the United States Internal Revenue Service (IRS), was visiting Nigeria to address regulatory concerns about Binance when local authorities arrested and jailed him on charges of money laundering and exploiting an unlicensed financial institution.

As Gambaryan’s health deteriorates and the Nigerian government refuses to provide him with adequate medical treatment, 18 U.S. state attorneys general wrote a joint letter telling Biden that Nigeria’s blatant abuse of power should be fought with the full weight of the US government’s influence, given America’s financial and political support for that country’s current regime West Africa.

Last week, Justice Emeka Nwite ordered that Gambaryan be released from Kuje prison where the leader was incarcerated after his indictment in April.

RU Adaba, a lawyer representing the prosecution, said Nigeria was dropping the charges due to diplomatic interventions and in consideration of the extent of Gambaryan’s involvement as a Binance employee.

The White House said that in a recent call, Biden thanked Tinubu for the developments in Gambaryan’s case.

“President Biden offered his condolences following the recent floods that affected northeastern Nigeria and noted his appreciation of President Tinubu’s leadership in securing the compassionate release of the American citizen and former US official. law enforcement, Tigran Gambaryan, last week.
