Democrat Gallego wins Arizona Senate race, defining Republican majority | US Election News 2024

The final ongoing Senate race for the 2024 elections has been called, meaning Republicans will hold a three-seat majority.

Democrat Reuben Gallego will return to Washington, albeit in a new role, after his Senate race against Republican Kari Lake was finally announced.

The Associated Press determined Gallego, who previously held a seat in the House of Representatives, to be the winner after vote count updates Monday closed any remaining path to victory for Lake.

With the Arizona Senate race closing, the last one in the balance, the Republican majority in the body is finally set at 53 seats, with the remaining 47 split between 43 Democrats and four independents.

This is the first time in four years that Republicans will control the Senate, likely giving them a clear victory in the 2024 elections. Former Republican President Donald Trump is the new president-elect after defeating Vice President Kamala Harris. Republicans are also expected to retain control of the House of Representatives.

Democrats took control of the upper house of the U.S. legislature after Georgia’s 2021 special election with a slim majority of 51 seats, including four independent senators. They would have had to defend every possible seat to keep it that way.

Gallego is a five-term House member and Iraq war veteran who will replace Kyrsten Sinema, a former Democrat who left the party and decided not to run as an independent.

Lake, a former news anchor and strong Trump ally who still refuses to acknowledge that she lost the state’s 2022 gubernatorial race, lost in a state Trump won this year, thus reinforcing the split vote trend in the 2024 election, in which Democrats performed better in the election than in the presidential race.

Control of the Senate, in which Republicans flipped four seats from blue to red, will give them strong influence over presidential appointments, from ambassadorial and cabinet posts to Supreme Court justices.

Republicans can now turn their attention to more than a dozen House races that have yet to be decided.

If they succeed in taking the House, it would give them firm control over the U.S. legislative agenda at least until 2026, when the next congressional midterm elections are scheduled.
