The world must recognize the Holodomor to understand the motivations behind Russia’s current aggression – FM

Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha urged all countries that have not yet done so to recognize the Holodomor as a genocide against the Ukrainian people.

He made this appeal on social media platformas reported by Ukrinform.

“On this day of remembrance of the victims of the Holodomor, we pay tribute to the millions of Ukrainians who were killed by starvation by Stalin and his regime. The Kremlin tried to break the spine of our nation, to wipe out generations This horrible crime is imprescriptible,” Sybiha stressed.

He stressed that global awareness of the Holodomor is essential to understanding the true motivations of Russia’s current aggression against Ukraine.

“I urge all countries that have not yet done so to recognize the Holodomor as a genocide of the Ukrainian people. We must remember this. Memory is our strength,” the Foreign Minister wrote.

THE Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MFA) of Ukraine stressed that the totalitarian regime of Stalin in the 20th century and the criminal regime of Putin in the 21st century resorted to acts of genocide. The Kremlin aims to cause a global food crisis and famine, by weaponizing the threat of famine.

“Russia is systematically and deliberately targeting our port infrastructure. Between July and October of this year, Russia carried out approximately 60 such attacks, resulting in damage or destruction of nearly 300 port infrastructure and 22 civilian vessels. These actions bear all the hallmarks of a genocidal policy,” the Foreign Ministry said.

Despite ongoing Russian aggression, Ukraine continues to serve as a guarantor of food security for many countries and regions around the world, the ministry added.

“No one anywhere in the world should go hungry. We Ukrainians understand this better than anyone and are ready to do something about it. Ukrainian grains are the cornerstone of global food security. Ukraine sovereign guarantees a global, just and lasting peace,” the press release underlines.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs recalled that 28 countries have recognized at the parliamentary level the Holodomor of 1932-1933 as a genocide against Ukrainians, and that Ukraine is continuing its diplomatic efforts to broaden this recognition.

“It is crucial that everyone understands: crimes that went unpunished in the past have direct consequences today. The world must provide a fair assessment of Moscow’s past crimes and a strong response to today’s global Russian threats “, concludes the press release.

As Ukrinform reports, this Saturday, Ukraine commemorates the victims of the Holodomor. This day of remembrance is celebrated every year on the fourth Saturday of November, based on presidential decrees of 1998 and 2007.

In the 20th century, Ukrainians endured three famines: 1921-1923, 1932-1933 and 1946-1947. The most devastating was the famine of 1932-1933, known as the Holodomor, a genocide perpetrated by Stalin’s regime.
