Early examples of the 1.0-liter three-cylinder were prone to head gasket leaks and even complete engine failure. However, the design flaws that led to these issues were quickly resolved, and many affected cars received warranty repairs and upgraded parts. So if an older copy hasn’t yet failed due to a manufacturing problem, it’s probably unlikely that this is the case. . There were a few recalls in 2018, but the defects were not specifically related to EcoBoost technology. A Focus 1.0-liter EcoBoost recall referred to a potentially overheated nylon hose in the cooling system, while a potentially more serious defect in the cylinder head of the 1.6-liter EcoBoost engines is not yet directly linked to EcoBoost technology.

“Wet belt” problem on the Ford EcoBoost

Perhaps the biggest cause for concern has been a major recall in North America in 2024, regarding the EcoBoost “wet belt” system. More than 130,000 Ford Focus and Ford EcoSport Vehicles equipped with the 1.0 liter EcoBoost engine and automatic transmission have been recalled due to a problem with the belt driving the oil pump, known as a wet belt.

The same engine and gearbox configuration was offered on the Focus, EcoSport and Fiesta in the UK. Although there have been several reports of problems with this engine and gearbox combination in the UK, Ford has yet to announce a recall here.

What are the advantages of the Ford EcoBoost?

Ford likes to explain EcoBoost by dividing the name into two constituent parts. “Eco” refers to the engine’s fuel economy and reduced CO2 emissions, while “Boost” refers to the power and performance potential of the unit. Both qualities are combined in a single engine package that delivers both efficiency and lively acceleration. Ford achieved this by using two specific technologies.
