Beltrami County Historical Society receives $49,261 grant for collections rehousing project

BEMIDJI — The Beltrami County Historical Society recently received a $49,261 Minnesota Historical and Cultural Heritage grant for Phase I of its Minnesota Historical Society Collection Relocation Project to ensure the preservation of its collection of over a million artifacts, documents and photographs relating to the north. Minnesota and Beltrami County.

According to a release, Phase I efforts include improving the storage environment, rehousing 85 percent of the physical artifacts on the museum’s mezzanine, and addressing preservation and accessibility needs.

New metal shelves and archival-quality materials will replace the old wooden shelves, which contributed to the deterioration of the collection. By reorganizing storage space and improving the housing of artifacts, BCHS can better protect and preserve these objects for future generations. And with improved storage, BCHS will gain nearly 2,500 square feet of new space for future collection growth, strengthening the museum’s ability to care for its collections.

Additionally, the John G. Morrison Jr. Collection, a significant group of Native American artifacts, will be moved to a more secure and environmentally friendly storage area during the project.

Combined with the City of Bemidji’s commitment to improving the air quality of the Great Northern Depot, where BCHS is located, the changes made through this grant will ensure the longevity of the community’s history.

“This grant is a critical step in our ongoing efforts to save Beltrami County’s history,” BCHS Executive Director Emily Thabes said in the release. “By consolidating these artifacts into appropriate storage, we not only prevent further damage, but we also make the collection more accessible for research, exhibitions and educational programs. This project ensures that the stories and history of our community will be preserved for future generations.

Individuals or teams interested in contributing to the rehousing project are encouraged to contact us. Tasks include removing old shelving, cleaning and preparing space, assembling new storage units, and carefully rehousing artifacts using archival materials.

No prior experience is necessary and training is provided.
