Man dead after police-involved shooting in Helena

A man is dead and a police officer is injured after an officer-involved shooting in Helena Saturday evening.

The Helena Police Department received a report of a man refusing to leave Jester’s Bar Saturday evening.

Employees say the man barricaded himself in the bar’s bathroom after refusing to leave.

They were eventually able to get the man to leave, but he returned to the bar after jumping a fence and entering the business through the back door.

After returning inside, the man barricaded himself again in the establishment’s toilets.

Once officers arrived on scene, they spoke to the man in an attempt to get him to leave the bar.

However, after refusing to leave, the man obtained a knife and brandished it at the police.

The police then attempted to arrest the individual using a Taser gun.

After the man was arrested, the officers tried to subdue him, but he stabbed one of them.

The officers then shot the man and shot him.

Medical treatment was provided to the individual after he was shot, but the man succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene.

The injured officer was taken to a nearby hospital where he was treated. He is currently in stable condition.

The officers who responded were all placed on administrative leave after the incident due to department policy.

An investigation is currently underway and authorities say the identities of those involved will not be released at this time.
