The Onion buys Alex Jones’ Infowars at auction with support from Sandy Hook families

Satirical news publication The Onion won the tender for That of Alex Jones Infowars in bankruptcy auction, backed by families of Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting victims to whom Jones owes more than a billion dollars in defamation judgments for calling the massacre a hoax.

“The dissolution of Alex Jones’ assets and the death of Infowars is the justice we have long waited for and fought for,” said Robbie Parker, whose daughter Emilie was killed in the 2012 shooting in Connecticut, in a statement provided Thursday by his lawyers.

The Onion acquired conspiracy theory platform’s website; social media accounts; studio in Austin, Texas; registered trademarks; and video archives. The sale price was not immediately communicated. The Onion said its “exclusive launch announcer” would be the gun violence prevention organization Everytown for Gun Safety.

The Infowars website appeared to be down Thursday morning. Jones was angry and defiant during his live show before announcing that his show was being shut down and signed off. Jones vowed to challenge the sale and auction process in court and said he would resume his shows from a new studio using websites and social media accounts that he said were already established .

“The journey has only just begun. Thank you,” concluded Jones.

The Onion, a Chicago-based satirical site that manages to persuade people to believe the absurd, confirmed the sale in a column on its website.

“No price would be too high for such a cornucopia of assets and malleable minds,” the satirical post said. “And yet, as luck would have it, a formidable special interest group outwitted the hapless owner of InfoWars (an unforgettable man with a name already forgotten) and forced him to sell it at a very bargain price: less than a trillion dollars. dollars. .”
