Jon Morosi: Braves target top shortstop in free agency

For Brave fans hope that the days of Orlando Arcia starts at shortstop are a thing of the past, this latest report from Jon Morosi will be music to the ears. MLB insider didn’t just link Braves to Dodgers starter Walker Bühlerwho recorded the final three outs of the World Series, but he also said Alex Anthopoulos had expressed interest in the star shortstop Willy Adamès.

Walker Buehler and Willy Adames are in two different aisles in free agency. Buehler, after a strong playoff performance, won’t come cheap, but he’s likely looking at a one-year deal where he can rebuild his value and re-enter free agency next offseason, when he could potentially sign a much more lucrative contract. .

Adames, meanwhile, is poised to become one of the highest-paid free agents in this year’s class. He’s coming off a season in which he hit a career-high 32 home runs and has crushed at least 25 homers in every season since 2021. From an offensive standpoint, Adames is one of the best in his career. position, and he hits free agency at the perfect time because there really aren’t any other healthy starting shortstops available.

This isn’t ideal news for the Braves, who have absolutely disdained getting into bidding wars for top free agents for as long as they’ve existed. There will be no shortage of suitors for Willy Adames’ services, so if the Braves are serious about bringing him in, they’ll have to step out of their comfort zone, which hasn’t happened yet under Alex Anthopoulos.

That being said, that doesn’t mean it can’t happen in the future. Last year we saw the Braves make a serious effort to force Aaron Nola away from the Phillies, offering him a six-year contract north of $150 million before signing a seven-year deal to return to Philadelphia. So the money is there; it’s just a matter of how much the Braves want him, and with the way Orlando Arcia has performed recently, they might feel the need to do whatever they can to fix their shutdown situation- short to long term.
