The Long Garden Conservation Project

The project will involve significant updates including replacing the central path with durable York stone paving, removing the old box hedge in favor of a more resilient yew hedge, replanting four flats -central strips and the installation of new automated doors at the entrance.

Our goal for this restoration is to create a more sustainable planting program that pays homage to Norah Lindsay’s original designs from the early 20th century. Situated along the northern boundary of the estate, parallel to Bourne End Road, the Long Garden will be updated to reflect both its historic roots and modern ecological considerations.

Cliveden’s action in favor of sustainable development

The restoration of the Long Garden is a response to both ecological concerns and a desire to honor Norah Lindsay’s original vision. The previous annual planting system, while visually appealing, was unsustainable due to its monoculture nature, high energy and resource demands, and the need for frequent replanting.

In 2022, Cliveden began transitioning to a more sustainable approach in the Long Garden, incorporating biodiverse plantings and reducing soil disturbance through a no-dig system. The new design aims to create a resilient, long-term planting program that reflects the influence of Norah Lindsay, while responding to current environmental challenges.
