Michigan organ donors can receive a $10,000 tax credit. Here’s what you need to know

Living organ donors in Michigan can receive a tax credit of up to $10,000 thanks to a new bill that Gov. Gretchen Whitmer signed into law Wednesday.

Below House Bill 4361Living organ donors are eligible for a tax credit to cover donation-related expenses, including lost wages and medical costs.

Taxpayers can claim the one-time credit in the year of organ donation, the year before, or the year after.

The tax credit can be claimed starting in tax year 2025, according to the bill.

The bill was sponsored by state Rep. Felica Brabec, D-Pittsfield Township.

“Organ donation means a lot to me and I have advocated for it passionately during my time in the House. I’m proud to continue working to make it easier for Michiganders to become organ donors, which changes lives and saves them too,” Brabec said. “This tax credit will help increase donations and save lives by removing key barriers for potential donors. »

To claim the credit, taxpayers may be required to submit verification of expenses claimed under this tax credit.
