Remember when saving the world was the hero’s final challenge? Fast forward to 2019, and we saw Earth’s Mightiest Heroes in Avengers: Endgame take on the ultimate challenge: saving half the universe! But after that, who could settle for less than several universes? Enter the multiverse, where superheroes now juggle realities like it’s nothing, all thanks to Doctor Strange.

The multiverse began in 2018 with Into the Spider-Verse. Then No Way Home brought together Tom Holland, Andrew Garfield and Tobey Maguire. But let’s not forget DC! They hadn’t stayed away. Shows like The Flash, Arrow, and Batwoman have twisted timelines like pretzels. Additionally, Teen Titans Go! Teen Titans blended characters from various realities into an epic animated showdown. And what’s next? The Flash movie promises a wild nostalgia trip with Ben Affleck and Michael Keaton’s Batman: thrill!

And if you think only superheroes have fun with alternate realities, check out Everything Everywhere All at Once. Michelle Yeoh stars as Evelyn, an ordinary girl who discovers she can access infinite realities while juggling a failing laundromat and a troubled marriage. Directed by the “Daniels”, this film mixes hilarity and sincere moments, proving that the multiverses are the talk of the town. They even refused to ask Loki to bring this crazy adventure to life. What about commitment?

So how did we get here multiverse madness? It all began in 1957, when mathematician Hugh Everett launched his “many worlds” interpretation of quantum mechanics. He claimed that every time you measure a particle, it generates copies in different universes. Think of a world where dinosaurs still walk among us or where you win the lottery every week. This idea was mind-blowing at the time, but it fueled countless science fiction stories, including Michael Moorcock’s The Sundered Worlds, which popularized the term “multiverse.”

Comic book fans? Oh, they jumped on that train too! DC’s The Flash started the alternate Earth craze in the ’60s, with superheroes crossing paths across realities. But it wasn’t all easy. DC tried to simplify things with Crisis on Infinite Earths in 1985, but surprise! The multiverse has come back in force, notably with The Multiversity by Grant Morrison.

Then there’s the MCU. Starting with Iron Man in 2008, Marvel built a vast, connected universe in which all fans were present. If one universe was good, why not have several? They took the idea of the multiverse and turned it into a box office boon.

As we look to the future, who knows where this wild journey will take us? With the success of Everything Everywhere All at Once, it’s clear that even though there are infinite parallel universes, we will always find our way back to just one, until the next dimension-hopping adventure comes along! Whether it’s Marvel’s Doctor Strange or a dream DC crossover, the multiverse is here to stay, and the possibilities are mind-blowing!
