Interior Ministry official among suspects arrested for facilitating illegal marriages

Three suspects, including a Department of Home Affairs employee, are expected to appear in the Durban Magistrate’s Court on Wednesday (October 30) for allegedly marrying South African women to foreign nationals at a wedding clandestine office in Greyville, Durban.

The suspects were arrested at their office in Greyville, Durban, on Monday, October 28, following an intelligence operation.

POLICE DISCOVER INTERNAL AFFAIRS OFFICE IN GREYVILLE

South African Police Service (SAPS) spokesperson in KwaZulu-Natal, Colonel Robert Netshiunda, said the suspects would take identity documents from South African women and marry them off to foreigners, especially to undocumented foreigners, so that fake husbands obtain South African citizenship.

Netshiunda said preliminary investigations have so far identified an Interior Ministry official who was working in cahoots with the suspects and further arrests cannot be ruled out as investigations unfold.

“Several application forms, copies of identity documents and electronic devices were seized. Among the three suspects, two men will be accused of fraud and the woman will be accused of defeating the objectives of justice after trying to conceal evidence by tearing up certain documents and throwing them in a trash can. The suspects are expected to appear before the Durban Magistrate’s Court on Wednesday, October 30, 2024,” explained Netshiunda.
