Why Toyota and Honda vehicles have such high resale values – NBC 5 Dallas-Fort Worth

Toyota and Honda have sometimes been called boring: Honda by its own engineers, Toyota more famously by a president descended from the company’s founder.

But even though they don’t have the flash of, say, European sports cars, both of these Japanese brands have enviable resale values. This means they keep more of their purchase price than any other brand – and the same goes for their premium brands – Toyota’s Lexus and Honda’s luxury brand Acura.

It’s been this way for years.

Toyota has overcome Kelley Blue Book has been named to the Best Resale Value list eight times since 2014, including the last four consecutive years. Lexus has won the group’s luxury car award five times.

Lexus is also in the lead THE luxury category for the list of JD Power residual awards. Honda took the dominant category.

Pricing and production discipline, a reputation for quality and durability, and a few other factors keep these brands at the top.

Another key for automakers is that Toyota and Honda listen carefully to their customers and try to build only what they think people will buy.

“The market tends to have much greater demand than Toyota provides, which keeps resales high, which keeps consumers happy, and the cycle goes on and on,” said Tyson Jominy, vice -President of Data Analytics at JD Power.

But so much has changed in the auto industry in recent years that the very strengths that have helped these brands succeed could be holding them back — and could knock them off the podium.
