“It’s like a warm bed”

UConn Huskies head coach Dan Hurley completely jinxed his senior guard.

A day after Hurley praised Hassan Diarra with multiple metaphors, Diarra had his worst game of the season against East Texas A&M with five uncharacteristic turnovers.

But just like Tuesday botched exit was an outlier for the Huskies, normally at ball security, it was an outlier for Diarra, the 2023-24 BIG EAST Sixth Man Award winner.

As Hurley continues to roll with junior transfer Aidan Mahaney at starting point guardDiarra remains one of the best players off the bench in the country.

During a media availability session On Monday, however, Hurley pointed out that Diarra might not leave the bench for long.

“Hass’ (bench) role is not set in stone,” Hurley said. “He’s a soldier. He played very well for us.

“It’s like a warm bed or a cozy blanket. Or being in your own house, using your own bathroom would be what Hassan is doing right now.

“He will play the starting minutes. He will be in the match until the end. … He’s a game changer when he gets in the game.”

Although the senior currently shares duties with Mahaney and Ahmad Nowell, freshman, rising starDiarra’s experience with Hurley ultimately made him the team’s most reliable point guard.

Something about the makeup of this team tells you that when UConn plays its most important games in March, it will be Diarra as the initiator in the most critical moments.
