What is Bluesky? What to Know About the Oklahoma-Owned Social Media App

play

More than a million new users joined Bluesky in a single day, bringing the number of accounts on rival X (Twitter) to more than 16 million.

As of Friday, Bluesky was the most popular free download on Apple’s App Store.

The social media site has been a place of refuge for former Twitter userswhich was renamed by Elon Musk under the letter “X” after purchasing the company in 2022.

During the 2024 presidential election, Musk publicly aligned himself with President-elect Donald Trump and the MAGA political movement. Users who stopped using the new X have complained that it has become a toxic environment where engagement is prioritized over factual information, bots are rampant and partisan advertisements are common.

The number of new users increased significantly in the days following the election.

Who owns Bluesky? Oklahoma native behind popular app

Bluesky is partly owned by CEO Jay Graber, who was born in Tulsa and graduated from the University of Pennsylvania before embarking on a career in Silicon Valley.

Bluesky’s board members also include Jeremie Miller, developer of messaging platform Jabber, Techdirt founder Mike Masnick, and Blockchain Capital general partner Kinjal Shah, according to Bluesky.

The project was started in 2019 by former Twitter CEO Jack Dorsey, but the two companies parted ways in late 2022 after Musk joined Twitter.

A company representative speak with USA Today described Bluesky as an “open social network that gives users choice, developers freedom to create, and creators platform independence.”

“Users also shared feedback that they received more engagement (and higher quality engagement) on Bluesky than on other platforms, despite initially having more followers elsewhere,” said Emily Liu .

Bluesky looks familiar, but has its own quirks

Those who have used Twitter in the past will notice similarities to Bluesky. The “Following” feed displays recent posts from people you have chosen to follow. The “Discover” tab uses a user-customized algorithm to display posts that may be of interest to you.

The layout strongly resembles X/Twitter, but Bluesky has its own quirks. Due to its decentralized setup, Bluesky allows developers to build on the social network framework. TechCrunch reported that this decentralization allows users to make more personal choices and portability of their data to other applications.

Bluesky also has a feature called Starter Packs, which are lists of accounts that you can share with others to quickly build your feed. And contrary to the new rule on blocked X accountsblocking a Bluesky user will prevent that account from seeing your posts.
