Illinois bans NFL betting ‘susceptible to abuse and manipulation’

The Illinois Gaming Board has officially banned NFL bets which may involve “serious risks” for the ethics of professional sport.

The Council says in a press release that the NFL he himself called for the Illinois Gaming Board to ban certain types of betting on the game; more specifically, the new decision will prohibit games of chance on:

  1. Player injuries
  2. Fan Safety
  3. Player misconduct
  4. Penalties
  5. Replay results
  6. Arbitration missions
  7. First part of the game
  8. Roster or personnel decisions
  9. A player misses a basket or extra point try
  10. Incomplete first pass
  11. Any other bet predetermined or 100% by a single person in a single game

Gaming Board administrator Marcus Fruchter wrote in the statement: “Predetermined choices and actions under the control of individual players, coaches or league officials are susceptible to abuse and manipulation.”

Illinois’ ban follows similar decisions in Indiana, Michigan and Ohio, showing just how popular sports betting is becoming. Illinois legalized sports gambling in 2019; Online betting, in particular, has seen considerable growth. The Gaming Board reported that $848 million was wagered in June alone, about $815 of which was wagered online.

The popularity and ease of online betting, however, has raised many concerns about the integrity of sporting competitions and the potential risks of gambling addiction. It appears that NFL (by far the most popular sports league for betting in the United States) is well aware of these concerns and seeks to nip them in the bud as much as possible.

It is likely that the NFL will continue to contact each state to request rulings against bets that can be easily manipulated, especially as legalized gambling through services like FanDuel and DraftKings handle larger and larger numbers of bets each year. These bets also seem to increase more each year.

Newsweek contacted the Illinois Gaming Board via an inquiry form and received video of the meeting where this decision was made.
