Flash Flood Watch Issued for USVI as Up to 10 Inches of Rain Expected in Some Areas

The National Weather Service in San Juan, Puerto Rico, has issued a flash flood warning for the U.S. Virgin Islands and nearby areas in anticipation of heavy rain and thunderstorms expected to intensify between Thursday morning and Saturday morning. This unstable weather pattern is due to a combination of mid- to upper-level atmospheric troughs and abundant moisture from a nearly stationary front, creating conditions ripe for intense thunderstorms throughout the region.

The NWS predicts total rainfall could reach between 3 and 6 inches, with localized areas in northern and eastern Puerto Rico, Vieques, Culebra and the U.S. Virgin Islands possibly reaching between 8 and 10 inches. Other areas may see precipitation ranging from 1 to 2 inches. This volume of rain, especially over steep terrain, increases the risk of flash floods, river flash flooding and possible mudslides.

Flash flood monitoring means there is a high likelihood that prolonged periods of moderate to heavy rainfall could lead to flash flooding and dangerous river flooding, with some rivers likely reaching or exceeding flood levels.

Additionally, the NWS warned of dangerous marine conditions expected to develop beginning Thursday. Strong winds and swell action will create potentially life-threatening rip currents, posing a risk to people living in coastal areas or engaging in maritime activities.

Residents and visitors to the U.S. Virgin Islands and Puerto Rico are advised to stay informed by monitoring weather updates and exercising caution, especially in coastal or flood-prone areas.
