As the holiday season approaches, a leading mental health expert told MSNBC viewers they should feel justified in cutting ties with loved ones who voted for President-elect Donald Trump.

Dr. Amanda Calhoun, chief psychiatry resident at Yale University, spoke with Joy Reid, MSNBC host Friday night on how liberals devastated by Trump’s re-election this week can cope with the news, including parting ways with loved ones.

“So if you find yourself in a situation where you have family members, close friends who you know voted against you… it’s completely okay to not be around those people and their say why,” Calhoun said. Reid said.

MSNBC host Joy Reid recently discussed how liberals should avoid family members who vote for Trump after the 2024 election with Yale University Psychiatry Chair Dr. Amanda Calhoun .

The host prompted the expert’s response by explaining how the LGBTQ community and other minority groups feel particularly vulnerable following Trump’s election early Wednesday morning.

Citing a recent report of the progressive media outlet The 19th, Reid said: “Yes, and we know there has been a big increase since the election – 700% increase in calls from LGBTQ youth to the Trevor Project, which offers phone calls, discussions online or text messages to people. – 700% increase in calls, texts and chats compared to recent weeks.”

The host then asked how these people should interact with those they know — including their family — who voted for Trump, whom she accuses of being against Americans’ rights.

Calhoun said it was good for those harmed by Trump’s victory to prevent Trump from supporting his family and friends, adding that they should tell them why.

“You know, to say, ‘I have a problem with the way you voted because it went against my livelihood, and I’m not going to be with you on this holiday. I need take some space for myself.'”

Calhoun went on to stress that it’s important, even “essential,” for people to establish boundaries with their family members for their own mental health.

“I think you should absolutely have the right to do that, and I think it can be essential for your mental health.”
