Roquan Smith fined for hip-drop tackle on Chris Godwin

Buccaneers wide receiver Chris Godwin apparently injured in ankle

The NFL has determined that Tampa Bay Buccaneers wide receiver Chris Godwin suffered a season-ending injury following an illegal tackle.

Baltimore Ravens linebacker Roquan Smith was fined $16,833 for what the NFL determined was a hip tackle on Godwin late in Monday night’s game.

Godwin caught a pass for a big gain with less than a minute remaining in the fourth quarter of the Ravens’ 41-31 victory over the Bucs at Raymond James Stadium in Tampa, Florida. His left leg got caught under him as Smith made the tackle. :

Godwin was left with a dislocated ankle. He had surgery Wednesday and will miss the rest of the year.

A hip tackle is defined as “when a defender wraps around a ball carrier and rotates or swivels his hips, relieving himself and falling onto the ball carrier’s legs during the tackle.” The play has been banned this season and can result in a 15-yard penalty, although the NFL mostly issues fines at the moment.

Houston Texans star Joe Mixon expressed outrage earlier this season a similar tackle that left him with an ankle injury. However, this play seemed much more egregious than what Smith did. Regardless, the NFL ruled that Smith’s tackle met the criteria for an illegal hip-drop.
