Do voters recognize the candidates

3 minutes of reading

Candidates for next year New Jersey gubernatorial election seem to have their work cut out for them.

A Rutgers-Eagleton poll conducted late last month found that Garden State voters, overall, are not familiar with all of the candidates — although several other candidates are still expected to announce their plans.

The field has already been flooded with potential candidates from both parties, but as Ashley Koning, director of the Eagleton Center for Public Interest Polling at Rutgers University-New Brunswick, said, “given that the governor of Next year has no clear starter or front. For the moment, a large majority of voters do not know or have an opinion on any of the declared or potential candidates.”

To what extent are Democratic candidates recognized?

For Democrats, the best-known candidate is former Senate President Steve Sweeney, but 44 percent of respondents didn’t know who he was. More than half of respondents did not know who the other candidates mentioned were, with 51% not knowing Newark Mayor Ras Baraka, 60% not knowing Jersey City Mayor Steve Fulop, and 65% not knowing Sean Spiller, president of the state teachers union. .

Even the two congressmen rumored to be considering running, Mikie Sherrill and Josh Gottheimer, were unknown at 53% and 56%, respectively.

Among respondents who knew who the candidates were, 16% had a favorable opinion of Baraka, 11% had an unfavorable opinion, and 21% had no opinion. Sweeney was viewed favorably by 12%, unfavorably by 19%, and 25% had no opinion and 44% did not know who he was.

Only 9% have a favorable opinion of Fulop, while 9% are unfavorable and 22% have no opinion. Spiller was viewed favorably by only 7%, unfavorably by 7%, and 21% had no opinion; 65% don’t know who he is.

Sherrill had the highest favorable rating at 19%, with 8% unfavorable and 20% no opinion while Gottheimer was considered favorable by 15%, unfavorable by 8% and 21% no opinion.

To what extent are Republican candidates recognized?

Even though there are fewer candidates on the Republican side, the numbers are similar.

Jack Ciattarelli, the party’s 2021 gubernatorial candidate, was the best known at 41%. Radio host Bill Spadea was unknown to 60 percent of those surveyed, and state Sen. Jon Bramnick was unknown to 68 percent.

Ciattarelli was the most favorable in his party with 20%, 16% unfavorable and 23% without opinion. Spadea had 9% favorable, 12% unfavorable and 18% no opinion while Bramnick was 7% favorable, 5% unfavorable and 20% no opinion.

“Name recognition will therefore be of crucial importance. As the number of candidates increases, so does the risk of getting lost in the sea of names,” said Kristoffer Shields, director of the Center for the American Governor at Rutgers University New Brunswick. “Candidates will need to move quickly to get in front of voters and stand out from the pack because the June primaries will be happening before we know it.”

What about Governor Phil Murphy?

As for Gov. Phil Murphy, his favorability is around 50%, which is just a few points off last year’s 56% at this time. Additionally, 55% of respondents approve of the work Murphy is doing.

The poll was conducted Oct. 15-22 statewide. There were 1,018 adult participants.
