    David Coote has been suspended by the Premier League and PGMOL pending a full investigation, but it is not the first time the official has been investigated

    Premier League official David Coote has been investigated by Professional Game Match Officials Ltd (PGMOL). The 42-year-old official was suspended immediately following a video showing him making crude comments about Liverpool and Jürgen Klopp.

    The clip shows Coote calling the club “s***” and Klopp “a German c***”. The video, which Coote would have confirmed its authenticity and appears to have been recorded during the COVID-19(female pandemic, was disclosed and widely shared on social networks.

    The PGMOL confirmed his suspension and announced a full investigation into the incident. However, this is the second time Coote has been investigated by the referees and officials’ organisation.

    In 2017, the Nottinghamshire referee was one of two match officials investigated in separate cases of alleged misconduct. During the 2017–18 season, Coote was suspended for several months.

    At that time, he had not chaired a Premier League match and mainly oversaw the championship matches. He remained on the Select Group 2 list, which includes referees just below Premier League level, but he was not allocated any matches for the first weeks of the new season.

    It was initially suggested that he was injured, but the daily mirror revealed that the PGMOL was still investigating him at that time. The PGMOL has not publicly revealed the nature of the allegations against it.

    They were thought to be linked to a previous role he held with a local football association. A few months after the investigation into his conduct began, Coote was quietly reinstated by the PGMOL.

    Shortly after, he found himself promoted to the Premier League. Fast forward six years since the initial investigation, and Coote has now been removed from refereeing duties in light of the video. The PGMOL released a statement saying: “David Coote has been suspended with immediate effect pending a full investigation. PGMOL will make no further comment until this process has been completed.”

    The footage shows Coote in conversation with a football fan discussing Klopp and Liverpool. When asked what he thought of an earlier Liverpool match, the referee replied: “Liverpool were rubbish.”

    The dialogue continues with the fan investigating Klopp. In response to the question, Coote replied: “C***. Absolute C***. As well as criticizing me when I refereed them against Burnley during lockdown, he accused me of lying and then got a f***** right. come see me.

    “I have no interest in talking to someone who is arrogant. So I try my best not to talk to him. James Milner is fine. You can see me there (in a photo on his phone) with a mask. I have to be careful, we are social distancing, we are two meters apart But my God, the German, c***.

    To conclude the clip, Coote appeals to the recipient of the video, saying: “Just to be clear, this last fucking video can’t go anywhere. Seriously.”
