Antonio Pierce of the Raiders after 1 year at the helm

Shortly after the Las Vegas Raiders’ embarrassing loss on Monday Night Football to the Lions last season, owner Mark Davis decided to fire Josh McDaniels and promote linebackers coach Antonio Pierce to head coach- chief. It was a move the team desperately needed at the time

Still, Pierce deals with the consequences of McDaniels’ decisions every week but makes the best of the situation. The final nine games of last season proved the Raiders made the right decision, even though their record this season shows they are just as bad as they were under McDaniels.

However, the Raiders play with pride under Pierce, even if they lose, which wasn’t always true under McDaniels.

It was a tough season for Pierce and the Raiders as a lot of things went wrong. Pierce said he is grateful for the opportunity to be a head coach in the National Football League – coaching in the NFL is another feather in Pierce’s cap.

Yet the year since has passed quickly, as has Pierce’s promotion.

“Quickly, you blink, and it’s there again. I was making sure my phone didn’t ring last night. But no, honestly, I learn a lot in a year. And you can’t prepare for it. You can’t sit there and think you know what’s going to happen because every day when I walk through that door something new happens, right?

“Every game creates a new obstacle, a new challenge for us. The squad, the coaching staff and the building. And I think just relying on the key people around me that I rely on with support, information, giving my opinion to get their ideas It’s been good But like I said, if you had asked me a year ago today, would I be here, I. would probably say “No,” right?

Pierce spent more than a decade in the National Football League as a player, winning one of the most improbable Super Bowls in NFL history.

Still, it’s completely different to be the head coach of a team, especially one with such a rich history. Pierce noted that while things didn’t go perfectly, he’s still grateful for the experience as a professional head coach.

“I think being in the position I’m in right now, I have a better understanding of our team, a better understanding of what we need to do to make things right, and we need to constantly continue to do that,” Pierce said. “And I think that’s the best part of this job that it’s never finished, right? So that’s my goal, and obviously, I’m just lucky to have this position.”
