DURBAN – The MK Women’s League is calling for stricter health regulations at Spaza stores in the eThekwini Municipality.

The group protested against foreign stores in the city on Friday, as cases of foodborne illnesses are on the rise across the country.

This month alone, at least 50 children have been hospitalized in the province for complications related to eating food purchased from Spaza stores.

“We have urged the municipality’s health inspectorate to step up its efforts to ensure that food sold to the public meets the necessary safety standards – this includes regular inspections, particularly in areas with a high concentration of illegal traders,” he said. said Pearl Gasa, head of the eThekwini Women’s League. .

She said authorities must make it their mission to ensure that food sold in stores was safe for human consumption.

“We call on relevant health authorities to allocate more resources to conduct regular inspections and ensure that food products not only meet expiration dates, but are also safe for consumption.”
