Astros expected to land star first baseman on short-term deal in MLB free agency

THE Houston Astros has had a glaring problem all season long with a revolving door around first base.

After a failed season from former American League MVP Jose Abreu, who was finally designated for assignment after being signed last offseason, the team couldn’t find a solid answer to solidify the roster. one of the corner places on the field in 2024.

With first and third base potentially being an important situation after Alex Bregman can find a new home this winter, the Astros are entering an important offseason if they hope to return to a deep playoff run. After being swept by the Detroit Tigers in the AL Wild Card Series this year, it was the first time in seven seasons that they failed to reach the American League Championship Series.

If they want to upgrade the first base position this offseason, they might get lucky with a top-tier slugger who could come to you at a bargain price.

This is exactly what CBS SportsMike Axisa thinks it will happen with one of his 10 bold MLB offseason predictions. In his article, he believes that the Astros could happily sign New York Mets first baseman Pete Alonso to a short-term deal, much like we saw last offseason with many big-name free agents.

“These days, teams simply don’t pay much for free agent first basemen,” Axisa writes. “This bold prediction says Alonso falls into the Bellinger/Chapman/Montgomery/Snell category and must settle for a one-year deal with a big salary ($35 million) and two player options. Let’s draw it for the Astros. Looks good?

Astros fans would be more than happy to sign a slugger like Alonso as their starting first baseman for the 2025 season. It could also address some of the concerns of Houston’s front office, which might be hesitant to pursue a multi-year contract for someone ‘one occupying this position after Abreu’s unsuccessful attempt.

A one-year deal still leaves extensions open for the future if the organization believes Alonso could add value to the team beyond next season. With other big-name free agents (like Kyle Tucker) expected to hit the market for the Astros in 2026, this could be the team’s best-case scenario.

Last season, Alonso hit .240/.329/.459 with 34 home runs and 88 RBIs. He also played in all 162 games for the Mets last season. Even though he begins his season at age 30, his longevity is not at all a concern. Over the past four seasons, the former Florida Gator has only missed 20 games.
