John Oliver chokes back tears as he explains his decision to vote for Kamala Harris: ‘I love this country’

Jean Olivier seemed emotional while explaining his decision to vote for Kamala Harris on the final Last week tonight before the 2024 presidential election.

In the show’s Sunday, November 3 episode, the 47-year-old British host – who moved to the US in 2006 before becoming a US citizen in 2019 – insisted he was “proud of ‘being an American’ while explaining the importance of elections.

“Elections alone are not enough to bring about large-scale change, but they are absolutely necessary for it to happen,” Oliver explained. “Because this is the day where you basically have to choose who you prefer to push over the next four years and where you’re going to push them from.”

Apparently with tears in his eyes, the TV personality continued, “Listen, I love this country. I’m an immigrant. I chose to be here.”

“I would say there’s nothing more American than having a healthy, conflicted relationship with those in power, even if you voted for them,” Oliver added, after referencing the song. Lee Greenwood of 1984’s “God Bless the USA” and said he was “proud to be an American.”

Acknowledging that his speech had not been “very uplifting,” Oliver replied that he would be “genuinely excited” about a time when Donald Trump would not run for president.

“If Donald Trump loses this election, he’s pretty much finished,” Oliver said on the show.

He told viewers: “I know he would put us through hell before he left the stage, but once the dust settled he would have lost two elections in a row and would be campaigning at 82 next time.” I think he would have finished.”

“And doesn’t that look great?” I know the problems he is a symptom of would persist, of course, but we wouldn’t have to deal with him anymore. Wouldn’t it be great to live in a world where he was no longer an active threat, but simply a nuisance? »Olivier continued.

He concluded: “I want to live in this world so much. And I hope everyone does everything they can in the next 48 hours to make this world possible. »
