Karnataka firecracker restrictions announced by Congress government, BJP says, target Hindu festivals – Karnataka News

The Karnataka government on Saturday imposed restrictions on the use of firecrackers ahead of Diwali, limiting the permitted hours for bursting firecrackers to a two-hour window between 8 p.m. and 10 p.m. The move drew sharp criticism from the opposition BJP party, which accused the Congress-led government of targeting Hindu festivals.

As per the government order, only eco-friendly green crackers are allowed during this period, which must comply with sound limits below 125 decibels.

The BJP criticized the move, accusing the Congress government of selectively imposing restrictions on Hindu festivals, such as Ganesh Chaturthi and Diwali.

Union Minister Pralhad Joshi criticized the Siddaramaiah-led government and said people wishing to launch firecrackers would do so regardless of restrictions imposed.

“When it comes to playing DJ music, getting FSSAI certificate for prasad at Ganesh pandals or ensuring Ganesh visarjan ends at 10 p.m., restrictions are always imposed. During this time, namaz begins in mosques as early as 5 a.m., but there are no similar restrictions. These regulations seem to only target Hindu festivals. those who are determined to burst crackers will continue to do so regardless,” Joshi told reporters.

Responding to the backlash, Karnataka Forest Minister Eshwar Khandre clarified that the regulations were in line with the directives of the Supreme Court and the central government, both of which impose a limited window of two hours for firecrackers and require the use of low-decibel green firecrackers. .

Khandre also responded to Pralhad Joshi’s stance, accusing him of not knowing his own government’s regulations and Supreme Court guidelines.

“If they have any concerns, they should question the Supreme Court and their own government’s decisions,” Khandre said, adding that the Karnataka government’s actions are strictly in accordance with the law.

Earlier today, Siddaramaiah said the sale of eco-friendly green crackers should be allowed in the state on the occasion of Diwali.

“Diwali is approaching. The Supreme Court has given guidelines on the type of crackers which should be burst. Only green crackers should be sold and they should be burst between 8 pm and 10 pm,” Siddaramaiah told reporters after the meeting.
