Election Day is not a federal holiday, which means most banks will be open.

Some local branches may close, however, so be sure to check a specific location before heading out.

Here is a list of what is open and closed on Election Day.

Is Election Day a holiday in New York?

Only five states, including New York, recognize Election Day as a holiday and require employers to give employees paid time off to vote.

Nine other states, including New Jersey, recognize Election Day as a holiday but do not enforce this mandate. Connecticut does not consider it a holiday. Employers can of course make their own adjustments.

Are schools open on election day?

Offices in states that recognize Election Day as a holiday, including those in New York and New Jersey, are closed for Election Day. This means the court system is disabled and you won’t find any appointments at the DMV. Other administrative offices in New York and New Jersey are also closed. In Connecticut, which does not recognize Election Day as a holiday, many state offices will likely be open.
