Group updates efforts to help families in need in Tuscaloosa

TUSCALOOSA, AlabamaWBRC) – Efforts to provide more support to struggling families of Tuscaloosa City School students continue.

People who want to help have come together to take stock of how things are going.

The band is called The Zone.

Tuscaloosa City Schools identified an area, or neighborhood in the city, where students were missing from class or experiencing other problems. If this problem can be solved with outside support, there are many people willing to help.

The zone operates out of the New Heights Community Resource Center, where representatives from Tuscaloosa Municipal Schools, the City of Tuscaloosa, United Way of West Alabama and other community supporters gathered for an update day.

The original area had 460 families in need of assistance.

Some of the needs included inadequate housing and food insecurity, among others.

A dozen partner agencies have come together to offer support to these families through The Zone. But more is needed.

“Connection with services. So what we offer here is a set of services for our families. So, being able to involve the 12 partners we have. That we can connect families with things like food. We have a pantry here. We can connect them with resources. We have rights and resources for people with disabilities,” said New Heights Area Manager Kalissa Bormann.

The Zone will conduct a public survey over the winter and listening sessions around Tuscaloosa are planned for the following spring.

You can reach Kalissa Bormann at 205-759-3534 Or [email protected] for more information about The Zone and the New Heights Community Resource Center.
