Michigan takes another step toward adding cameras to catch speeding in construction zones

Cameras that Automatically send tickets to people speeding in construction zones could come to Michigan.

The Senate voted Thursday to approve adding these cameras to the roads where crews work.

Under the bills, if drivers are reported exceeding the speed limit by 10 mph or more, they will first receive a warning. If they are caught speeding in a construction zone again, a ticket will be mailed to the vehicle owner’s home.

The Senate’s “yes” came the day after a construction worker fatally struck while working on I-75 in Detroit.

“We’re not out to catch people in a trap moment. This is about safety, this is about saving lives,” State Rep. Matt Koleszar (D-Plymouth) said of the bill.

The measure is modeled after a similar law that took effect in Maryland, he said.

“What they found over a three-year period, they found that speeding was reduced by 80 percent, and they found that deaths from crashes in those work zones were reduced by 50 percent.” , Koleszar said.

According to state data, there were 8,017 accidents in work zones in 2023, an 8% increase from the previous year. Among these accidents, 24 people were killed.

The bills now return to the House for final approval before being sent to Gov. Gretchen Whitmer’s desk.
