California nonprofits receive more than $40 million in federal funding to improve safety

State officials announced Thursday that more than 300 California-based nonprofit organizations, including synagogues, mosques and black institutions, would receive more than $43.7 million in federal funding to help increase security against hate crimes, according to a press release.

Security improvements funded through the grants may include gates, reinforced doors, access control systems, high-intensity lighting and filtering systems, officials said.

“An attack on any community is an attack on our entire state and our values,” California Governor Gavin Newsom said in a statement. “We will protect every Californian’s ability to worship, love and gather safely without fear of hate or violent attacks. California continues to protect all communities, including those most at risk.
