MLB sends harsh message to Yankees fans who interfered with Dodgers’ Mookie Betts

Major League Baseball has asked the Yankees to ban two fans who wrestled with Dodgers star Mookie Betts for a ball during Game 4 of Game 5 on Wednesday, according to ESPN’s Jesse Rodgers.

They will be refunded for their tickets for Wednesday’s game, according to Rodgers, but it is unclear whether MLB wants to ban them for next season’s games. Capobianco told Rodgers that he received a call from the Yankees on Wednesday regarding his Game 5 ban and was told that if he or his friend tried to enter with more tickets, they would be stopped at the gate .

The Yankees released the following statement on Wednesday:

Last night, two fans were ejected from Yankee Stadium for blatant and unacceptable physical contact with Dodgers outfielder Mookie Betts.

The safety and security of players, fans and stadium staff is the fundamental element of every event held at Yankee Stadium and cannot be compromised.

Tonight marks the last home game of the year, and we want every ounce of our fans’ passion to be on display. Yankee Stadium is known for its energy and intensity, but the exuberance of supporting one’s team can never cross the line and intentionally put players in physical danger.

The Yankees and Major League Baseball maintain a zero-tolerance policy toward the type of behavior displayed last night. These fans will not be allowed to attend tonight’s game in any capacity.

“I’ve never seen anything like this,” Betts said after the game, via Los Angeles Times. “But there’s always a first time for a first.

The incident occurred in the Yankees’ first at-bat when Gleyber Torres threw a foul ball down the right field that Betts caught against the wall. He was eliminated and both fans were immediately removed from the match by security.
