How Dan Campbell Prepares Ben Johnson and Aaron Glenn to Become Head Coaches

THE Detroit Lions The coaching staff is stacked with future NFL head coaches, including two coordinators who are expected to draw strong interest from several other organizations.

As a result, head coach Dan Campbell led each week meetings that allow Ben Johnson, Aaron Glenn and Dave Fipp to view the game outside the prism of their specific areas of expertise.

With a coaching staff loaded with years of experience and playing time in the NFL, Campbell has relished in everything the team has been able to accomplish. Over the course of four years together, the Lions saw their fortunes change and the organization won praise from pundits and fans alike.

“Yeah. I’m enjoying every moment of it because you don’t have the guarantee, we don’t have the guarantee of winning anymore, as far as it goes,” Campbell said. “You have to win every one of them, and you don’t know what’s going to happen the next day or the next game in front of you. But I do. It’s a special team, and it’s a special staff. And it’s been like that from the beginning, it really is.”

This has been compared to the Patriots’ era of success during CampbellDuring Bill Belichick’s recent media session, he had future head coaches such as Charlie Weiss and Romeo Crennel on his staff.

In the image, taken after the Patriots’ victory over the Philadelphia Eagles in Super Bowl XXXIX, Belichick hugs both of his coordinators, with Crennel set to become head coach of the Cleveland Browns and Weiss leaving for Notre Dame.

Campbell remembers the image of the three coaches, noting that it was an iconic part of the Patriots dynasty.

“Actually, it is. It’s a great picture,” Campbell said. “That was a special team, that really started it all. It was a special group that those guys had.”

NOW, Campbell is in a similar field and several members of his team are expected to take over their own teams in the future.

“Yes, absolutely. I’m lucky, I’m blessed, I’m grateful to have the coordinators, including Fipp,” Campbell said. “These three guys are superstars. And I know, when it’s over, it’s over. But we’re going to make the most of it until that time comes.”

During these weekly meetings that he leads with the staff, Campbell allows coordinators to share their ideas and know the whole training process as a head coach. As a result, they can begin to formulate their own individual opinions on how to effectively run a game. Assistant head coach/running backs coach Scottie Montgomery is also a part of these meetings.

“First, because these guys will eventually become head coaches, whether now or later. So it’s good for them to see it.” Campbell said. “It’s also good for them to see the other side. Being able to see it from a defensive point of view of managing a game, to see it from an offensive point of view of managing a game. You do this and you find out what is right for you.

“They know what’s good for us, because that’s how I see it. Eventually, when this becomes their team, maybe they’ll see things a little differently,” Campbell continued. “There may be a more conservative approach, there may be a more aggressive approach. But you just want to make sure that you have all the facts and that you know that you are able to integrate them into your own way of looking at the things and making the best decision possible. It was good for us.
