Outer Banks Season 4 Ending, ExplainedJackson Lee Davis/Netflix

Well, once again, Outer Banks left our collective jaws on the floor. We were hit with another super-emotional and extremely shocking cliffhanger of a season finale. Viewers were expecting high stakes for Season 4 Part 2, with all the big reveals from Part 1. Some might even say they predicted the events that happened in the last five episodes. But person could have been prepared – at least mentally and emotionally – to that absolutely, heartbreaking tragic death.

To say a lot has happened to our ragtag group of treasure-hunting teens is an understatement. There’s a lot to analyze, so let’s get to it. You probably clicked on it hoping to be spoiled. But, JIC, I would like to warn you: major spoilers in front!

A Pogue-let is on the way!

So we already knew it from the first part of season 4, but John B. (Chase Stokes) and Sarah (Madelyn Cline) reveal to the whole group – Pope (Jonathan Daviss) and Cleo (Carlacia Grant) being the last to know – that they are pregnant. JJ (Rudy Pankow) is of course the godfather.

This is excellent and uplifting news at a time when it seems the group is out of options, with their original Poguelandia about to be taken away from them and them stuck in Morocco without a passport. The baby is a sign of hope for the future, as the Pogues have an uncertain path ahead of them.

Rafe breaks up with Sofia

As the hunt for Blackbeard’s blue crown begins, the group is chased by the police because Rafe (Drew Starkey) steals the money and passport of another man in the city. During all of this, Rafe slips away to find Chandler Groff (J. Anthony Crane) – who we find out this season is actually JJ’s father Kook – to recover the $400,000 that Groff swindled from him. In order to collect the debt, Rafe ends up helping Groff out of a deadly situation with the mercenaries.

Rafe takes Groff hostage. In an attempt to distract him and free himself, Groff reveals to Rafe that he hired his girlfriend/fiancée Sofia (Fiona Palomo) and paid her to “push” Rafe into making the fraudulent deal that cost him Dear. After pushing Groff into a well and leaving with the original scroll showing the location of Blackbeard’s blue crown, Rafe calls Sofia and breaks up with her.

Meanwhile, the Pogues follow their own map and clues and find Groff stuck in the well. Although he asks JJ for help, they decide to leave him.

The Pope avenges the death of Terrance

The mercenaries end up getting closer to Rafe and the Pogues decide to help him. During this intense, action-packed scene, Pope kills Lightner (Rigo Sanchez) while protecting Cleo, and avenges the death of Captain Terrance (Terance Rosemore).

If you remember, earlier this season, Terrance – who was a father figure to Cleo, practically raising her for 13 years – dies saving his pseudo-daughter and takes a bullet from Lightner.

We say goodbye to one of the Pogues

Some fans may have expected Pogue to die at some point, especially in a series where all of its protagonists constantly find themselves in dangerous situations. If you remember the season 1 finale, fans were led to assume that John B. and Sarah were screwed, but then they came back weeks later.

Well, this time there is no way out. We see the bloody murder before our eyes. After an entire season of questioning his identity, ruining things for his chosen family, and then redeeming himself at the end, JJ dies at the hands of his own father.

Here’s how it happened: Being the expert treasure hunters that they are, the Pogues are able to recover the Blue Crown in the middle of a sandstorm. JJ and Kiara (Madison Bailey) try to escape the mercenaries and run with them. However, Groff manages to get out of the well, captures Kiara and threatens to kill her unless JJ gives him the crown. JJ gives the crown to Groff, saying he doesn’t need it anyway, since he already has everything he ever wanted – things his father will never have. (Insinuating his family and chosen friends.) That’s when Groff stabs and kills his own son, then flees with the crown in his hands.

What is happening now?

The Pogues mourn the death of their dear friend and decide to say goodbye to him by burying his body in the Moroccan desert. Of course, even after the funeral, they all return to camp stunned, they’re all still completely shaken and heartbroken as they mourn the loss of JJ. However, Rafe wants to shake things up. He reveals Groff’s plans to sell the crown to Lisbon and urges the Pogues to take revenge.

Fueled by their anger and desire for revenge, it looks like we’ll soon see the Pogues heading to Lisbon. Season 5 should be the last OBXand it will definitely be an epic ending.
