Mary Schlais’ family, geneticists speak out after arrest in unsolved Dunn County case

Authorities will hold a news conference in Dunn County Monday afternoon, after holding one last week regarding an arrest made in a decades-old cold case.

The Dunn County Sheriff’s Office announced that members of Ramapo College, as well as at least one member of the family of Mary Schlais – who was found dead on February 16, 1974 in Spring Brook Township – would be present at Monday’s press conference.

When he died, Schlais was hitchhiking from Minneapolis to Chicago for an art exhibition.

Investigators in the case worked with a team of genetic genealogists from Ramapo College to identify Jon Miller, now 84, of Owatonna, as the suspect. He was arrested last Thursday.

Charging documents in Dunn County Circuit Court said the DNA came from an orange and black beanie found near Schlais’ body in 1974. The document says Miller initially denied knowledge of the homicide . However, when presented with the DNA evidence, he allegedly admitted to picking up Schlais.

According to the document, Miller told investigators he requested sexual contact from Schlais, which was refused. Miller said he then grabbed a knife he kept in the passenger seat visor as Schlais leaned forward and stabbed her until she died, according to the complaint.

He then allegedly tried to hide her body in a snowbank, but became afraid when he saw another vehicle pass in front of him and left the scene.

The complaint says Miller admitted the hat belonged to him and that he must have lost it during the homicide.

Monday’s press conference will take place at the Judicial Center at 1 p.m. Check back for the feed and updates.
